The Geographical Indications India Registry has finalised and released the Manual of Geographical Indications Practice and Procedure. The GI Manual seeks to act as a guide to prospective applicants and GI practitioners, in order to streamline and bring uniformity in the filing procedures and improve compliance with various provisions.
The GI Manual is the third in the series of manuals released by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (after the Manual on Designs Law and Patent Law), which has been finalized after receiving public comments on a draft version. The recent transparency drive of the Indian Patent Office is appreciable.
Opening up and revising the official drafts based on public comments is a welcome first step. The office has finalized the manuals for three different IPRs within a span of less than one year.
