Seetharaman Sampathis a Principal Partner of Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan (L&S). He heads the competition law, international trade and corporate law practice verticals at L&S. He also oversees the functions of Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, SARL based in Geneva that specialises in WTO Issues.
Seetharaman is an international trade lawyer specialising in GATT and other WTO agreements. He has represented clients from around the globe in over 200 trade remedy cases initiated by India, EU, USA, South Africa, China, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Canada, Egypt, Turkey, Brazil, etc. He has represented Government of India in several Countervailing Duty investigations by EU, USA and Safeguards duty Investigations by Turkey and Peru. He has experience in representing interested parties either seeking or opposing the imposition of trade remedy measures. As a litigating lawyer, he has appeared before the CESTAT, High Courts and the Supreme Court in a number of trade remedy and other cases.
Seetharaman has represented Government of India in two WTO Disputes, one against Turkey and the other against the USA. He has also represented Government of China in a several transitional product specific safeguard investigations conducted by the Government of India. Seetharaman is also advising Government of India on ongoing WTO Rules Negotiation.
Since the introduction of the Competition Act in India, Seetharaman leads a team of lawyers’ exclusively practising competition law and has represented national and international clients before the Competition Commission of India, Competition Appellate Tribunal and High Courts of India. He has experience in handling complex issues including issues on the interplay between competition law and intellectual property rights and has advised and represented clients in cartel investigations. Seetharaman regularly advises and provides periodic training to clients on their business operations from a competition law perspective.
Seetharaman has also advised many corporate clients on issues relating to company law, foreign trade policies, FEMA, etc besides representing clients before the Appellate Tribunal for Foreign Exchange.
Before joining the firm in 2000, Seetharaman was a civil servant. He has served the Government of India as a member of the Indian Civil Accounts Service in various capacities such as Deputy Controller General of Accounts, Ministry of Finance, Deputy Secretary in the Union Public Service Commission, etc.
